Projects, Branches, and Influences:
what is a project?
A Project encompasses a series of digital files that were created while making a piece of digital content. For example, a project may consist of a 3D model shared by a digital artist, or a series of Photoshop files shared by a graphic designer. Digital content creators can share their project files on Modulatr for feedback, instruction, or to simply let other artists push their projects in different directions.
How do i create a project?
  • Once logged in, you can start a project from the "Create a Project" button in the top menu bar.
  • Under the "Overview" tab, you can add text, images, or video links to describe your project.
  • Under the "Influences" tab, you can paste links to videos, images, or other Modulatr projects that have influenced you during the creation of your project.
  • Under the "Files" tab, you can paste links to your work files via Dropbox, Box, etc. so other users can download your work files.
  • After you've created your project, it will be available for other artists on the platform to download your files, and add or modify them. Then, those artists can post new versions of your project in the form of "Branches".
What is a branch?
If you're familiar with how GitHub works, branches on Modulatr are very similar. A Branch is an addition to an existing project that may be a modification of previous files taken from the project. A branch can be created from any previously posted branch. Branches can be visualized in the project tree diagram as more and more branches are added to the project.
How do i create a branch?
After you've downloaded files from a branch, and created your modifications to those files, you can post your files as a new branch to the project. Navigate to the existing branch that you want to branch from, and you will see a "Branch" button on the right-side project panel. By clicking the "Branch" button, you will be able to describe your new branch, and upload your modified files. Your new branch will be added to the project diagram, connected to the previous branch.

When adding a branch to an existing project, a good rule of thumb is to make sure what your adding is relevant to the overall project. For example, if you're adding a rendering of a dog to a project about particle simulations, your branch might not be relevant, and other users may ask for your branch to be removed.
What is an influence?
An "Influence" is anything that inspires you while you work on cool stuff! If you watch a video, see an image, or even read a moving piece of poetry, you can add it to your Modulatr project as an influence. Influences can be added as text, photo links, or video links.
I tried to create a project, but nothing happens!
If your project fails to create after adding your title, description, and image, it's probably failing because your chosen image is too large. The current file-size limitation for default project images is 20mb or less. We plan to increase this size limitation in the future, but during the beta phase, please make sure your images are smaller than 20mb.
Supported formats, and technical information:
what browsers are supported?
Modulatr is supported on the following browsers:
Google Chrome
Mozilla Firefox
Microsoft Edge
Apple Safari, Version 10.1.3 and above

There's some pretty weird issues with Internet Explorer, so if you're a Windows user, we suggest enlightening yourself with a better browser, as suggest above ;)
Why do I have to use 3rd party file storage, like dropbox?
Modulatr will eventually accept large-size file upload for your work files, but currently, you must use 3rd party file storage to share your files. The nature of constant iteration to project means A LOT of big files, so in order to keep the beta running smoothly, we will all need to rely on 3rd party file storage for the duration of beta development.
what image formats are supported?
We Support:
- JPEG
- GIF
- PNG
Image sizes:
Images uploaded between 1400px wide and narrower will be displayed at their native uploaded sizes. Images larger than 1400px wide will display at 1400px but can be expanded when they're clicked within a project. The current image size restriction is set to 20mb or less.
How do i create a branch?
After you've downloaded files from a branch, and created your modifications to those files, you can post them as a new branch to the project. Navigate to the existing branch which you've downloaded the files from, and you will see a "Branch" button on the right-side project panel. By clicking the "Branch" button, you will be able to describe your new branch, and upload your modified files. Your new branch will be added to the project diagram, connected to the previous branch.
What is an influence?
An influence is a link to external content that is added to a project or branch. An artist may add an influence to their project of something that inspired their work, or to content that was used as reference when creating their project content. Influences can be added as text, photo links, or video links.
File size limitations for images?
You can upload a default project image when you create a new project, and you can change it later if you'd like. Currently, the file-size restriction for uploaded images is 20mb or less.
Intellectual Property, Copyrights, and all that jazz:
if i share my work, do i still own it?
Well, sort of. When you share your project work on Modulatr, you agree to allow other users to modify, experiment with, and learn from your work. This is what separates Modulatr from every other content-sharing site out there. When sharing your project work, you effectively enter into a joint intellectual property agreement with everyone who contributes new branches to your project. Check out the Modulatr Terms of Use page for more information on file ownership.
Can I share my contract work from previous jobs on modulatr?
We recommend not sharing contract work on the platform, unless your employer has granted you full rights to share your work. For instance, if you did a sweet animation for Nike, check with them before your toss your 3D model files on here. Modulatr does not assume any liability for copyright infringement, or any weird stuff like that. For more info on Modulatr copyright and IP, sure to check out Terms of Use page.
can i share my branch files to social media?
Yes you can, as long as you include a link to your Modulatr branch, so everyone can see the work that was contributed up to that branch. This is a simple way of crediting all of the previous artists that contributed to the project before you.
WHAT IF SOMEONE DOWNLOADS AND SHARES MY FILES TO SOCIAL MEDIA without permission?
That depends. If someone created a new branch from your existing project files, and shares the modified versions of your files, that's cool, as long as they share the link to the Modulatr project. However, if someone directly downloads your files and shares them as their own, that would be a violation of Modulatr Terms of Use, and the user who ripped your files may be banned from the platform. Please feel free to reach out to Modulatr staff with any questions or concern about this type of thing.
what is purchased files are shared on modulatr without permission?
You should obtain express permission to share digital assets that you have purchase from other websites. Modulatr does not monitor project files for licensing permissions obtained from other websites. If you are selling or licensing digital assets on your website, and you come across a Modulatr project that contains your copyrighted material, please inform us.
